The Choice Is Yours

I have a new rule about purchasing clothing; if I’m not in love with it, I don’t buy it. If that means my wardrobe is more limited but what I do have I actually wear and feel great in, I’ll take it. I have articles of clothing in my closet that seemed like a good idea at the time, but every time I try them on, it just doesn’t work.

Gym memberships are a little bit like clothing in that way. Making that purchase seemed like a good idea at the time, but when it comes to wearing it, it doesn’t work. You walk in, it doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t fit. You ask yourself, “where should I start?” and look around for a friendly face but instead, you feel invisible. Yeah, the monthly membership is affordable at $19.99 a month, but do you go on a regular basis or does your checking account own the membership? Does your checking account even know how to do squats? You have locked yourself in for a year but are not benefiting at all.

Then there are personal training gyms that cost a little more, but the benefits are far greater. I have a pair of Lululemon workout pants I received as a gift about six years ago that still look and feel great. If you’ve never heard of Lululemon, let’s just say it’s the BMW of athletic wear. For argument’s sake, I will venture to say that I have worn them and washed them approximately 200 times. Even if I purchased them myself for $100, would you say that I have gotten my money’s worth?

Now let me ask you a more serious question; how much is your life worth? I’m sure you would agree that it’s priceless, right? Then why do most people think that paying $300 per month to add years to their lives and prevent diseases is too much? Think about all the money we spend on things that are not good for our health; monthly restaurant expenses which have us sitting and consuming way too many calories, our Starbucks addictions that add tons of sugar to our diets, and Netflix subscriptions that keep us on our tushes instead of moving them. Add up those extra calories and added monthly expenses and then ponder the return on those investments? Weight gain and money lost. Shifting our priorities can make all the difference. The difference between good health or disease, moving well or being stiff and achy, living a longer, healthier, happier life or not. The choice is yours.
