MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’re used to hearing us talk about the most commonly known benefits associated with exercise:

  • Weight loss
  • More strength
  • Muscle gain
  • Higher energy level
  • Improved movement
  • Decrease in aches and pains
  • Better blood pressure/cholesterol numbers

In addition, there is strong evidence to suggest that being physically fit can have a positive impact on our mental health as well.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and today we are going to extoll the virtues of exercise as it relates to improved mental health.

Reduce stress and anxiety: Exercise has been shown to reduce levels of stress hormones in the body, such as cortisol, and increase the production of endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety.

Improves cognitive function: Regular exercise has been linked to improved cognitive function, including better memory, attention, and decision-making abilities.

Boosts self-esteem: Regular exercise can help to improve body image and self-esteem, which can, in turn, have a positive impact on mental health.

Reduces symptoms of depression: Exercise has been shown to be an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression, possibly due to its ability to increase the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine that are involved in mood regulation.

Improves sleep quality: Regular exercise has been linked to improved sleep quality, which is important for maintaining good mental health.
