Do You Have a Dream?

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Back in the day, when the kids were young, at this point in the summertime, we would start to count down the last low-key remaining days until the start of school. While they were complaining about how fast the summer went and how the school year should be two months long, and summer should be ten months long, I would be secretly celebrating. I loved being an at-home mom, but it did take its toll in the summer with all of that extra time on our hands. My goal every day was to find low-cost activities for three energetic kids who were all two years apart.

The beginning of August meant their time for sleeping in late, going to the beach, and roasting marshmallows at night would soon be coming to an end.

This year, I am openly celebrating the new school year for a different reason!

I always dreamed of going to graduate school, but it never seemed like the right time. Last spring, while my husband and I were taking a walk in the park, I told him how passionate I was about this dream. Marty, being who he is, was 100 percent on board.

I started my research, applied to a few schools, and got rejected by one. Then, that magical day arrived on June 5, with a call from Fordham. I had been accepted into their Graduate School of Social Services to pursue a Master’s of Social Work!

IMG 0144I get to integrate my passion for physical health with mental health, and I believe the two are strongly dependent on each other.

For those of you who are contemplating a career change, additional schooling, or getting back into the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom, I urge you to dream big. Don’t talk yourself out of your vision of the future and don’t let other people tell you that it can’t be done.

Do not think about the “HOW.”

Think about your “WHY” instead.

Think about what you want your legacy to be.

DREAM BIG DREAMS because…

“It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot
